Disparities in rates of surgical intervention among racial and ethnic minorities in Medicare Accountable Care Organizations
Annals of Surgery Feb 13, 2019
Schoenfeld AJ, et al. - The effect of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) on the use of surgical services among racial and ethnic minorities was determined via comparing rates of surgery among white, African American, Hispanic, and Asian Medicare beneficiaries for coronary artery bypass grafting, colectomy, total hip arthroplasty, hip fracture repair, and lumbar spine surgery using national Medicare data (2009–2014). Between the time periods 2009 to 2011 and 2012 to 2014, persistent differences in the use of surgery were noted among racial and ethnic minorities. The formation of ACOs did not influence these disparities. This highlights the necessity for programs that specifically incentivize ACOs to improve surgical access for minorities.
