Disparities in hospice utilization for older cancer patients living in the deep south

Turkman YE, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers examined how deep South patient and hospital characteristics are associated with hospice utilization among Medicare cancer decedents aged ≥65 years in 12 southeastern cancer centers between 2012 and 2015. Outcomes revealed that patient and hospital characteristics influence hospice utilization. They noted no hospice in correlation to patients who were nonwhite, and nonnavigated, and hospitals with inpatient palliative care beds. Being male and seen at a hospital without inpatient palliative care beds were noted to be correlated with “late hospice”
