Disparities in access and mortality of patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction using the Brazilian Public Health System: VICTIM register
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 15, 2019
Oliveira JC, Almeida-Santos MA, Cunha-Oliveira J, et al. - Researchers used the VICTIM (Via Crucis for the Treatment of Myocardial Infarction) register database to compare patients with ST-segment–elevation myocardial infarction using the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) vs those using the private healthcare system, in terms of rates of myocardial reperfusion use and 30-day mortality. They examined overall 707 patients, including 589 patients from the SUS and 118 from the private network. These patients have visited hospitals with the capacity to perform primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). For the SUS patients, they reported almost 3 times higher delay in reaching a PCI hospital. In both groups, underuse of primary PCI was reported; this finding was seen particularly in the SUS patients. The probability of dying during the 30-day follow-up was more in the SUS patients.
