Disorders of adjustment, mood, and anxiety in children and adolescents undergoing heart transplantation and the association of ventricular assist device support
The Journal of Pediatrics Nov 22, 2019
Diaz I, Thurm C, Auerbach S, et al. - All pediatric heart transplant recipients (1999-2016) were involved (n = 3,073) from a linked administrative and clinical registry database in order to evaluate the predominance of psychiatric disorders and related therapies in children during their heart transplantation admission. In pediatric heart transplant recipients, psychiatric disorders were prevalent particularly among those connected with ventricular assist device support. Psychiatric diagnoses and the use of antidepressants progressed over time, possibly designating enhanced identification of psychiatric comorbidities in this vulnerable population. Moreover, access to psychiatric services showed a significant element of the multidisciplinary team caring for pediatric heart transplant recipients.
