Disease trajectories for hidradenitis suppurativa in the Danish population
JAMA May 24, 2020
Andersen RK, Jørgensen IF, Reguant R, et al. - Researchers investigated the temporal associations of comorbidities with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) diagnosis via conducting a retrospective registry-based cohort study including the entire Danish population alive between January 1, 1994, and April 10, 2018 (7,191,519 unique individuals). A total of 14,488 patients were diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa in Denmark during the study period. The diagnosis of hidradenitis suppurativa is frequently preceded by inflammatory diseases, diabetes, depression, asthma, and reaction to severe stress, and adjustment disorders. Possibly, these comorbidities are linked with its development. Per findings, there may be a high frequency of type 1 diabetes and subsequent high risk of acute myocardial infarction, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among patients with newly diagnosed HS.
