Disease severity and perinatal outcomes of pregnant patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
Obstetrics and Gynecology Apr 02, 2021
Metz TD, Clifton R, Hughes BL, et al. - Researchers aimed at delineating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity in pregnant patients as well as examining the correlation between disease severity and perinatal outcomes. In this observational cohort study, they assessed a total of 1,219 pregnant patients with a singleton gestation and a positive test result for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Of these patients, 47% were asymptomatic, 27% had mild disease, 14% had moderate disease, 8% had severe disease and 4% were critical. Findings revealed an increased risk of perinatal complications among pregnant patients with severe–critical COVID-19, but not among those with mild–moderate COVID-19, when compared with those with SARS-CoV-2 infection without symptoms.
