Disease progression and comorbidities in lipedema patients: A 10‐year retrospective analysis
Dermatologic Therapy Nov 26, 2020
Ghods M, Georgiou I, Schmidt J, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for determining the most common comorbidities in lipedema patients and the influence of surgical treatment onto disease progression. A retrospective assessment of disease‐related epidemiologic data was conducted for patients who had liposuction between July 2009 and July 2019 in a specialized clinic for lipedema surgery. All individuals got a standardized questionnaire regarding the clinical history and changes of lipedema‐associated symptoms and comorbidities after surgery. One hundred six patients who underwent a total of 298 liposuction procedures were involved in this study after returning the questionnaire fully filled‐in. The prevalence of obesity, hypothyroidism, migraine, and depression were substantially increased in contrast to similar nonlipedema populations. On the basis of available data, they propose the need for a multimodal therapy concept for comprehensive and holistic treatment. Lipedema patients seem to have an advantageous metabolic risk profile despite a commonly increased BMI.
