Disease characteristics and outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes: A matched cohort study of spironolactone users and non-users
BMC Nephrology Mar 07, 2020
Blankenburg M, et al. - Researchers performed this non-interventional, retrospective cohort study to define the features of spironolactone users and non-users with diabetic kidney disease (DKD), as well as to describe their clinical results. They used a US claims database (PharMetrics Plus) and the Experian consumer data asset, to extract demographic and clinical data. A greater comorbidity burden at baseline was observed in spironolactone users vs matched non-users, this is indicative of the likely contribution of the presence of certain comorbidities to the decision to prescribe spironolactone. The necessity for novel therapies for DKD was highlighted by the observed high healthcare resource utilization as well as expenses for patients at later stages of the disease, regardless of spironolactone use.
