Disease burden of patients with osteoarthritis: Results of a cross-sectional survey linked to claims data
Arthritis Care & Research Feb 05, 2020
Callhoff J, Albrecht K, Redeker I, et al. - Researchers sought to examine factors correlated with the burden of osteoarthritis (OA), taking the pattern of joint involvement into account. A total of 3,564 individuals completed a survey including the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) from a random sample of 8,995 individuals with OA (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, German Modification codes M15 [polyarticular], M16 [hip], or M17 [knee]) from a German statutory health insurance database. In multiple linear regression models, the relationship of age, gender, BMI, symptom duration, and the World Health Organization–5 Well-Being Index (WHO-5) with WOMAC results was evaluated. In individuals with concomitant hip and knee OA, the disease burden is high and is connected with frequent prescription of analgesics. When using the WOMAC as an outcome instrument, the involvement of several joints, BMI, and depressive symptoms requires to be considered.
