Disease burden and associated risk factors for metabolic syndrome among adults in Ethiopia
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Nov 02, 2019
Solomon S, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis, researchers determined the prevalence and risk factors related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Participants included 325 adult outpatients at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The researchers used the STEPwise approach of the World Health Organization to conduct their analysis, using modified National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III criteria to define MetS. They also carried out univariate and multivariate analyses. The overall prevalence of MetS was estimated to be 20.3%. At least one MetS components was detected in 76.9% of 325 participants. The factors that conferred risk for MetS were older age, Amhara ethnicity, overweight status, higher income, and higher education levels. Findings revealed a high disease burden of MetS among Ethiopians. In such a low-income country, the authors noted the need for comprehensive screening, evaluation of MetS, and effective preventive and treatment strategies.
