Discriminating Alzheimer's disease progression using a new hippocampal marker from T1-weighted MRI: The local surface roughness

Human Brain Mapping Nov 22, 2018

Platero C, et al. - Given that hippocampal atrophy is one of the main hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), researchers intended to determine if this sign is a robust finding during the early stages of the disease, such as in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD). In this context, they proposed a new marker for evaluating hippocampal atrophy, local surface roughness (LSR), and tested this marker in a sample of 307 subjects. The LSR classification precision for NC and SCD was 68.2%, while normalized hippocampal volumes (NHV) was 57.2%. Furthermore, the LSR classification accuracy for stable MCI (sMCI) and progressive MCI (pMCI) was 74.3%, while NHV was 68.3%. The LSR marker exhibited a better forecast for AD than NHV conversion. These outcomes indicate how important it is to consider the LSR as a new hippocampal marker for the AD continuum.
