Discrepancies between BMI and classic cardiovascular risk factors
Obesity Surgery Jun 27, 2018
van Mil SR, et al. - In a group of obese and non-obese subjects, researchers investigated the association between classic cardiovascular risk factors and inflammatory markers with body mass index (BMI). For this study, they included obese subjects (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2; n=576; mean ± SD BMI 43.8 ± 7.58 kg/m2) scheduled for bariatric surgery. As per outcomes, the obese subjects demonstrated the strongest relation between markers of inflammation and BMI, probably due to higher adipose tissue mass. However, cardiovascular risk factors did not seem to deteriorate above a certain BMI level. These findings might be explained via limited expansion capacity of visceral adipose tissue.
