Discontinuation of acute prescription medication for migraine: Results from the Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) study
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Sep 30, 2019
Lipton RB, Hutchinson S, Ailani J, et al. - Researchers analyzed data of Chronic Migraine Epidemiology and Outcomes (CaMEO) Study survey respondents who stopped taking acute prescription medications for migraine, in order to assess the migraine-related burden and treatment decisions in these patients. The respondents were queried regarding length of time since last use and reasons for stopping the medication. Among 13,624 respondents, ever use of acute prescription medications was reported in 4,840 (35.5%) and there were 1,719 (35.5%) who were discontinued users. Five or more headache days per month were reported in 646 of 1,719 (37.6%) discontinued users. Observations revealed a high level of unmet treatment need among people with migraine who discontinue the acute prescription medication. Headaches do not permit the majority to work or function normally.
