Disability-adjusted life years following adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States: A burden of disease estimate
Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes Mar 18, 2019
Coute RA, et al. - Researchers used data from the national Cardiac Arrest Registry to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALY) post-adult nontraumatic, emergency medical services–treated, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). They also compared OHCA DALY to other preeminent causes of death and disability in the United States. The study sample consisted of 59,752 OHCA patients. In 2016, the DALY for the study population was nearly 1.2 million. For the index year 2016, nearly 4.4 million were reported as the calculated total DALY following adult nontraumatic emergency medical services–treated OHCA. With DALY 1,347 per 100,000 population, OHCA ranked third in the United States behind ischemic heart disease (2,447) and low back and neck pain (1,565). In the United States, adult nontraumatic OHCA was identified as a leading cause of annual DALY.
