Direct visualization transversus abdominis plane blocks offer superior pain control compared to ultrasound guided blocks following open posterior component separation hernia repairs

Hernia May 06, 2018

Doble DA, et al. - Researchers here tested their hypothesis that transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block performed under ultrasound guidance (US-TAP) and under direct visualization (DV-TAP) provide equivalent postoperative analgesia following open VHR. Findings suggested DV-TAP blocks providing superior analgesia in the immediate postoperative period. Patients in the US-TAP group required significantly more narcotic administration during their hospitalization to achieve similar post-operative pain scores. They underscored DV-TAP to be a valuable addition to VHR recovery pathways.
