Direct oral anticoagulant- vs vitamin K antagonist-related gastrointestinal bleeding: Insights from a nationwide cohort
American Heart Journal Jul 31, 2019
Butt JH, Li A, Xian Y, et al. - In this observational cohort study, researchers used data from Danish nationwide registries to assess in-hospital death in relation to the type of preceding oral anticoagulant use (warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants [DOACs]) among all patients admitted with first-time gastrointestinal bleeding from January 2011 to March 2017. They used multivariable logistic regression models for analysis. The study sample comprised 5,774 patients with median age 78 years; 56.8% were men. Prior use of DOAC and warfarin was reported in 2,038 (35.3%) and 3,736 (64.7%) patients, respectively. The investigators found that in-hospital mortality did not differ statistically significantly between prior use of DOAC and warfarin among patients admitted with gastrointestinal bleeding.
