Direct medical costs in the preceding, event and subsequent years of first severe hypoglycaemia requiring hospital transfer: A population-based cohort study
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Feb 14, 2019
Wong CKH, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, researchers estimated the use of healthcare services and direct medical costs accrued by patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the year before and after the year of the first severe hypoglycaemia (SH). Between 2006-2013, all DM adults managed in the primary care setting from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority were involved. In the event year and in particular in the previous year, SH is related to excessive hospitalization admission rates and direct medical costs vs patients without SH. Investigators found that incremental costs of SH vs matched control in the event year and the preceding year were US$10,873 and US$3,974.
