Direct effect of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine use on pneumococcal colonization among children in Brazil
Vaccine Jul 24, 2019
Neves FPG, et al. - Researchers analyzed children (n=500, < 6 years old) visiting public (n = 270) and private (n = 230) clinics in Niterói/RJ, Brazil, in 2014, to determine the carriage prevalence, capsular types, and antimicrobial resistance among pneumococci isolated from children immunized with 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). Among the vaccinated children, colonization with PCV13 serotype was a rare finding. The frequency of major serotypes currently related to invasive pneumococcal diseases in Brazil, such as 3 and 19A, might be attenuated by increasing PCV13 coverage. Close monitoring is needed for the isolation of multidrug-resistant serotype 6C and non-typeable isolates in carriage.
