Direct anterior approach to the hip does not increase the risk for subsequent periprosthetic joint infection
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 13, 2021
Shohat N, Goswami K, Clarkson S, et al. - In recent studies, utilization of the direct anterior (DA) approach to the hip is reported to be linked with increased risk for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Researchers here examined the existence of such an elevated risk in a large cohort of patients, operated by experienced surgeons and taking into account various confounders. This single institutional study was performed including a total of 10,201 patients who received primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). Among these patients, 4,390 (43.0%) underwent THA through the DA approach and 5,811 (57.0%) through the direct lateral approach. Findings overall suggest no increased risk for subsequent PJI in correlation with employing the direct anterior approach to the hip.
