Diminished androgen and estrogen receptors and aromatase levels in hypogonadal diabetic men: Reversal with testosterone
European Journal of Endocrinology Jan 22, 2018
Ghanim H, et al. - Researchers aimed to explore whether males with type 2 diabetes presenting with hypogonadism, characterized by low total and free testosterone concentrations correlated with a compensatory increase in the expression of androgen receptors (AR). They also determined if testosterone replacement reversed these changes. In addition, estrogen receptor and aromatase expression were estimated. In contrast with this hypothesis, the expression of AR, ERα and aromatase were significantly diminished in hypogonadal men as compared to eugonadal men with type 2 diabetes. A reversal of these deficits was noted following testosterone replacement.
