Dilute povidone-iodine solution prevents intraoperative contamination of sterile water basins during total joint arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 26, 2019

Nazal MR, et al. - Through a total cohort of 104 patients who underwent primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA), researchers examined the impact of dilute betadine addition to the sterile water contents (0.02% solution) of the splash basin on contamination rates. Zero was positive in the betadine group, while there 23 positive samples in the sterile water group of the final 100 postprocedure samples. The most prevalent species grown were Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus, Corynebactrium, and Micrococcus, of the positive cultures. For cases with positive cultures, the mean operative time was an average of 11 minutes longer. Thus, in total joint arthroplasty procedures, treating sterile water splash basins with dilute povidone-iodine (0.02% solution) reduces intraoperative contamination of splash basins. This intervention is easy, cost-friendly, and easily implementable, making it a flexible addition to TJA protocols.
