Dilute betadine lavage reduces the risk of acute postoperative periprosthetic joint infection in aseptic revision total knee and hip arthroplasty: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Arthroplasty Sep 20, 2019
Calkins TE, Culvern C, Nam D, et al. - In this randomized controlled trial involving 457 patients, experts aspired to explore whether dilute betadine lavage vs normal saline lavage decreases the rate of acute postoperative periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in aseptic revision total knee (TKA) and hip arthroplasty (THA). For this analysis, patients undergoing aseptic revision TKA and THA were randomized to obtain a 3-minute dilute betadine lavage (0.35%) or normal saline lavage prior to surgical wound closure. In aseptic revision TKA and THA, dilute betadine lavage before surgical wound closure seems to be a simple, safe and effective measure to lessen the risk of acute postoperative PJI.
