Digital vs light microscopy assessment of surgical margin status after radical prostatectomy
Virchows Archiv Feb 27, 2018
Volavsek M, et al. - It was hypothesized that digital microscopy (DM) would potentially offer a more objective way to estimate positive surgical margin (PSM) and better define its clinical importance in the case of prostate cancer. When compared to light microscopy (LM), DM yielded similar data but exhibited more accurate measurements. Reporting of PSM with a score of ≤ 3 vs > 3 mm linear extent using LM (3.2 mm if digital microscopy was applied) could serve as a crucial prognostic feature after radical prostatectomy. In contrast, reporting the number of blocks with PSM 1 versus 2 or more could offer vital prognostic data in practice.
