Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is useful for assessing inflammatory myopathies
Muscle & Nerve Apr 19, 2019
Faruch M, et al. - In whole-body MRI, short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sequences are usually utilized to perceive muscle edema (ME) in inflammatory myopathies, so researchers assessed b-value 800 diffusion-weighted imaging (b800 DWI). Two independent radiologists and a consensus reader reviewed 60 patients with inflammatory myopathies and 15 controls retrospectively. Compared to STIR, diffusion-weighted imaging found more ME. With both sequences, agreement between readers was better than with b800 DWI or STIR alone. For assessing inflammatory myopathies, diffusion-weighted imaging is a beneficial addition.
