Diffusion tensor imaging of the calf muscles in subjects with and without diabetes mellitus
Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Apr 17, 2019
Edalati M, et al. - In this prospective study involving 13 healthy controls and 13 patients with type 2 diabetes (DM), researchers compared the diffusional properties of the calf muscles of those with vs without diabetes during rest and isometric plantarflexion exercise. A combination of nonparametric (Wilcoxon) and parametric (t-test) statistical assessments was used. Investigators found significant diffusional changes in the calf muscles between healthy subjects and diabetes subjects at rest and during isometric plantarflexion exercise. Findings revealed that the most diffusion sensitivity to diabetes-related microstructural changes was seen by the medial gastrocnemius muscle.
