Diffusion kurtosis imaging as an imaging biomarker for predicting prognosis in chronic kidney disease patients
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Jul 28, 2021
Liu Y, Zhang GMY, Peng X, et al. - Researchers assessed the long-term prognostic value of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), a promising method of magnetic resonance imaging, in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). They prospectively enrolled 42 CKD patients in this study, and participants underwent DKI on a clinical 3 T MR scanner. Cases with comorbidities that could impact the volume or the components of the kidney, were excluded. On Cox proportional hazard regression, eGFR loss of more than 30% and end-stage renal disease were shown to be independently predicted by lower eGFR and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. Findings demonstrated significant predictive value of renal ADC values, obtained from DKI, for the prognosis of CKD patients. This could serve as a promising noninvasive technique in follow-up.
