Barco S, et al. - Researchers analyzed the available literature data on the link between syncope and short-term adverse outcomes in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), taking into account the presence or absence of haemodynamic compromise at acute PE presentation. They analyzed overall 29 of 1, 664 identified studies, with a total of 21,956 patients with PE (n = 3,706 with syncope). A higher prevalence of haemodynamic instability and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction at presentation, and an elevated risk for early PE-related adverse outcomes, were noted in relation to syncope as a manifestation of acute PE. In addition, studies including unselected patients vs those focusing on normotensive patients only revealed a more prominent link with an increased risk of early death.
