Differential gut microbiota composition between type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and healthy controls: A systematic review
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Feb 08, 2021
Umirah F, Neoh CF, Ramasamy K, et al. - Researchers summarized the latest findings on the differential composition of gut microbiota in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in this systematic review. Using electronic databases, a literature search was conducted. Researchers distinguished relevant studies and evaluated them for risk of bias. The composition of gut microbiota in healthy controls and T2DM was the primary outcome of this systematic review. The correlation of gut microbiota with metabolic parameters was considered as secondary outcomes. They used 13 case-control studies involving 575 T2DM and 840 healthy controls. The findings revealed that butyrate-producing bacteria are negatively associated with glycemic parameters. In T2DM patients, lactobacilli are higher and Firmicutes is associated with inflammation.
