Differential diagnostic value of 18F-FDG PET/CT for benign and malignant vertebral compression fractures: Comparison with magnetic resonance imaging

Cancer Management and Research Jul 27, 2018

He X, et al. - The differential diagnostic value of 2-[fluorine-18]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) vs magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for benign and malignant vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) was evaluated. In this study, malignancy was strongly suggested in relation to MRI findings, such as convex posterior cortex, epidural mass formation, and pedicle enhancement. Based on both maximum standardized uptake value and 18F-FDG uptake pattern, 18F-FDG PET/CT assuredly differentiated malignant from benign fractures. In cases where MRI findings are not diagnostic, additional information could be gained using 18F-FDG PET/CT, as it has high sensitivity and is semiquantitative.
