Different reconstructive techniques for tumours of the distal tibia: Intercalary resection, osteoarticular graft, or ankle arthrodesis
The Bone & Joint Journal Nov 04, 2020
Sambri A, Rosa MD, Scorianz M, et al. - This study was undertaken to evaluate the outcomes of three forms of reconstruction for patients with a distal tibial bone tumor: an intercalary resection and reconstruction, osteoarticular reconstruction, and arthrodesis of the ankle. This retrospective, multicentre study enrolled a sum of 73 individuals with a median age of 19 years (interquartile range14 to 36). In individuals with a distal tibial bone tumour, preservation of the epiphysis was found to be a safe and effective form of limb-sparing treatment. It needs rigorous preoperative planning after an accurate analysis of the imaging. The outcomes of this study demonstrate that when joint-sparing resection is not highlighted, ankle arthrodesis, either isolated tibiotalar or combined tibiotalar and subtalar arthrodesis, should be preferred over osteoarticular reconstruction.
