Westerlind E, et al. - This research was sought to assess self-perceived outcomes and distinguish possible prognosticators of strength, participation, and emotional outcome 5 years after stroke based on functional dependency at discharge from hospital. An observational cohort study was conducted to include individuals living in Gothenburg that was diagnosed with first-ever stroke in 2009 and 2010. Researchers obtained baseline data from medical charts and the outcome was based on the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) questionnaire mailed out 5 years post-stroke. The potential predictors of better strength, participation, and emotional outcome were distinguished by Logistic regression. A sum of 266 individuals responded to the SIS. The results of this research reveal that important factors for prognosticating a favorable outcome differed due to the level of functional dependency, and modifiable factors were only present in individuals that were functionally dependent at discharge. It was shown that the prevention, detection, and treatment of modifiable factors give an opportunity to reduce the burden of stroke for those who are most vulnerable.
