Different outcomes in sporadic vs familial medullary thyroid cancer
Head & Neck Dec 17, 2018
Saltiki K, et al. - Experts evaluated the clinical course of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) with familial cases (fMTC) diagnosed earlier than sporadic MTC (spMTC). They followed a total of 273 MTCs (familial: n = 110 [40.3%], males: 38.5%) for 1-35 years (median 5.0 years). Nonetheless, they noted similar stage at diagnosis after excluding genetic screening cases, disease outcome remains worse in sporadic compared to fMTCs. Lower preoperative and postoperative calcitonin, more frequently remission and less frequently progressive disease were seen in fMTC. Compared to spMTC, outcome was more favorable in fMTC; fMTCs and spMTCs demonstrated significant difference in the 10-year probability of lack of progression of disease.
