Different dose regimes and administration methods of tranexamic acid in cardiac surgery: A meta-analysis of randomized trials
BMC Anesthesiology Jul 19, 2019
Guo J, et al. - With regard to the use of tranexamic acid (TXA) in cardiac surgery, the optimal dosage and delivery method which is effective with the least adverse outcomes was investigated via this meta-analysis including studies published before 2018/12/31 in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE and EMBASE. Included studies involved adult patients undergoing elective heart surgeries, and were randomized control trials that compared TXA with placebo. A total of 49 studies with 10,591 patients were analyzed. Findings revealed the efficacy of TXA in attenuating transfusion need in all kinds of cardiac surgeries. The most preferable delivery method was low-dose intravenous infusion. In attenuating transfusion rate, this method displayed effectiveness equal to that of high-dose regimen, without increasing the risk of seizure.
