Differences in the opioid consumption of terminally ill schizophrenic and nonschizophrenic cancer patients: Analysis of secondary national population data
Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Jan 25, 2020
Lin HY, et al. - Researchers analyzed data derived from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database in this population-based retrospective cohort study investigating the dosage of opioids used in terminally ill cancer patients with and without schizophrenia. Following 1:4 matching, they included 1,001 schizophrenic cancer patients in the schizophrenia cohort and 4,004 cancer patients without schizophrenia in the nonschizophrenia cohort. Observations revealed lower use of opioids in cancer patients with schizophrenia near the end of life than their nonschizophrenic counterparts. Cognitive impairment is suggested to be playing a causative role for this disparity in end-of-life care for terminally ill schizophrenic cancer patients. Hence, they recommend formulating a more precise pain scale system and paying attention to their necessity for pain treatment.
