Differences in service utilization at an urban tribal health organization before and after Alzheimer disease or related dementia diagnosis: A cohort study
Alzheimer's and Dementia Oct 04, 2019
Schaefer KR, Noonan C, Mosley M, et al. - Researchers conducted a cohort study of electronic health record data to determine the prevalence, mortality, and healthcare impact of Alaska Native and American Indian (ANAI) people with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD). They compared healthcare service utilization in individuals with and without an ADRD diagnosis. To estimate utilization rates, zero-inflated negative binomial regression with robust standard errors was utilized. Utilization rates were similar before but higher after ADRD diagnosis compared with patients without ADRD. For those with diagnosed ADRD, throughout the year of diagnosis, usage gradually increased with sharp upward change. This is the only research that quantifies changes in healthcare use before and after ADRD diagnosis among ANAI individuals, which is essential to tailoring ANAI population geriatric care.
