Differences in norms towards the use of nicotine vaping products among adult smokers, former smokers and nicotine vaping product users: Cross-sectional findings from the 2016 ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey
Addiction May 11, 2019
Aleyan S, et al. - Via assessing cross-sectional data from the 2016 ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey, researchers examined if Australia, Canada, England, and the United States vary regarding norms towards nicotine vaping product (NVP) use. In addition, they examined the influence of sociodemographics, smoking and NVP status on these norms. Participants comprised 10,900 adults [from Australia (n=1,366), Canada (n=3,309), England (n=3,835) and the United States (n=2,390)] current smokers, former smokers, or at least weekly NVP users. Compared with Australian respondents, those in England, Canada and United States more often reported frequent exposure to NVPs in public, having a partner who vaped and having close friend(s) who vaped. Respondents from England more frequently reported that society and people important to them approved of NVP use when compared with Australian respondents. These findings suggest that countries with different regulatory contexts regarding sales and advertising vary in terms of norms towards nicotine vaping product (NVP) use.
