Differences in maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes between syphilitic women with and without partner coinfection
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Dec 06, 2019
Zhang XH, et al. - Pregnancy outcomes were determined among syphilis discordant vs syphilis concordant couples. This retrospective study was conducted among 3,076 syphilis-positive women who received syphilis screening together with their partners during pregnancy. Among these women, 657 were diagnosed with gestational syphilis and had a syphilis-positive partner, giving a partner concordance prevalence of 21.36%. Relative to women in discordant couples, women in concordant couples more frequently had higher parity, more children, late antenatal care and syphilis screening, a lower proportion of latent syphilis, and elevated serologic titers. Observations revealed increased risks for stillbirth, preterm birth, and low birth weight when the male partner was coinfected; this was noted particularly in the presence of suboptimal gestational syphilis treatment. Adequate treatment could reduce this risk.
