Differences in clinical characteristics and outcomes for blunt versus penetrating traumatic pulmonary pseudocysts
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Sep 26, 2020
Beattie G, Cohan C, Tang A, et al. - As there are only few works reporting traumatic pulmonary pseudocysts (TPPs) in blunt trauma and penetrating trauma, researchers sought to determine if blunt and penetrating TPPs have different clinical characteristics and outcomes. They evaluated computed tomography imaging for patients presenting at a level 1 trauma center with confirmed TPP from 2011 to 2018. Among the 101 identified TPP patients (blunt = 64; penetrating = 37), penetrating TPPs showed a unique pattern of concurrent lung injury and raised complication risk. Regardless of injury mechanism, severe hemoptysis and air-fluid level were linked with risk of impending morbidity and mortality and hence, these factors should serve as early warning sign for the trauma physician.
