Dieting and substance use among white and black adolescent girls
Eating Behaviours May 29, 2021
Rowe AT, Khazvand S, Wu W, et al. - As per previous work, adolescent girls have an increasing co-occurrence of dieting and substance use behavior. Researchers herein examined the concurrent and prospective correlation between dieting behavior and substance use across 1 year, then by race, among these girls. Data was obtained from 1,580 girls (grade 6–11; 78.2% White; 21.8% Black) on their dieting behavior and substance use. Findings suggest predictive value of dieting behavior for substance use 1 year later among adolescent girls. They indicated a trending effect of dieting to later substance use among White girls. No correlation was observed between dieting or substance use among Black girls.
