Dietary supplement use and its micronutrient contribution during pregnancy and lactation in the United States

Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 29, 2020

Jun S, Gahche JJ, Potischman N, et al. - Researchers investigated pregnant, lactating, and nonpregnant and nonlactating women in the US, to estimate the prevalence of use and the micronutrient contribution of dietary supplements in these groups. For this purpose, they used cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2014). Data were combined from 1,314 pregnant, 297 lactating, and 8,096 nonpregnant and nonlactating women (aged 20–44 years). Findings revealed the use of one or more dietary supplements by 77% of pregnant women and 70% of lactating women, whereas the use of supplements was reported in 45% of nonpregnant and nonlactating women. Experts found that dietary supplements were consumed by the majority of pregnant and lactating women, which contributed many nutrients in doses above the recommended dietary allowances. Despite inadequate consumptions of folate and iron being a concern in pregnant women not taking supplements, intake of high doses was commonly seen in supplement users, this indicates the potential necessity of healthcare providers to discuss dietary supplement use and the advised doses of nutrients during pregnancy and lactation.
