Dietary sodium, sodium-to-potassium ratio, and risk of stroke: A systematic review and nonlinear dose-response meta-analysis

Jayedi A, et al. - Using PubMed and Scopus, a systematic search was performed from database inception up to October 2017 to examine the dose-response association of dietary sodium and sodium-to-potassium ratio with the risk of stroke in adults aged 18 years or older. They included prospective and retrospective observational studies reporting risk estimates of stroke for 3 or more quantitative categories of dietary sodium or sodium-to-potassium ratio. Researchers reported that higher sodium intake and higher dietary sodium-to-potassium ratio were correlated with a higher risk of stroke. Findings suggested that reducing dietary sodium-to-potassium ratio could be considered as a supplementary approach in parallel with the decrease in sodium intake in order to reduce stroke risk.
