Dietary saturated fat intake and risk of stroke: Systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Dec 10, 2019
Kang ZQ, et al. - In order to assess potential dose–response link between saturated fatty acid (SFA) consumption and stroke, researchers performed this meta-analysis including relevant studies identified from PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science. They used random-effects models to pool summary relative risks of the highest vs the lowest category of SFA consumption and their 95% confidence intervals. They also assessed linear or nonlinear dose–response trend estimations using data from classes of SFA intake in each study. For high vs low meta-analysis, eligible studies were 14 in total with 598,435 participants, and for the dose–response relation evaluation, there were 12 eligible studies with 462,268 participants. Findings revealed a lower risk of stroke in relation to a higher intake of dietary SFA. Also, a 6% relative risk reduction in the rate of stroke was observed in relation to every 10 g/day increment in SFA consumption.
