Dietary protein intake in older adults undergoing cardiac surgery
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jun 24, 2019
Goldfarb M, et al. - Researchers assessed dietary protein intake after cardiac surgery in older adults ≥60 years of age in this prospective sub-study. During the three phases of care, ie, before surgery, early postoperative period, and 1-4 months post-surgery, protein intake per kilogram of body weight per day (g/kg/d) was calculated and compared to the dietary reference intake. Overall 22 patients (8 females, 14 males; 59% frail) with a mean age of 72.0+7.8 years were included. Compared to the recommended target, a considerably lower intake of dietary protein was observed in the early postoperative period in older adults undergoing cardiac surgery. A therapeutic target may be developing strategies to improve protein consumption, especially in frail older patients, as older adults have larger protein requirements after major surgery.
