Dietary patterns are associated with predicted 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease among Ghanaian populations: The Research on Obesity and Diabetes among African Migrants (RODAM) study
The Journal of Nutrition Apr 29, 2019
Boateng D, et al. - In the multi-center, cross-sectional RODAM study, researchers used Poisson regression with robust variance to evaluate the associations of 3 dietary patterns (DPs- ‘mixed’; ‘rice, pasta, meat, and fish’; and ‘roots, tubers, and plantain’) with estimated 10-y atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk in Ghanaian adults in Ghana and Europe. They estimated 10-y ASCVD risk for 2976 subjects, aged 40–70 y, by using the Pooled Cohort Equations. They defined ‘elevated’ ASCVD risk as having a risk score ≥7.5%. In adults in urban Ghana, an attenuated predicted 10-y ASCVD risk was observed in relation to adherence to ‘mixed’ and ‘rice, pasta, meat, and fish’ DPs. Findings also revealed a direct association of a ‘roots, tubers, and plantain’ DP with increased 10-y ASCVD risk.
