Dietary patterns and risk of systemic lupus erythematosus in women
Lupus Nov 25, 2019
Tedeschi SK, Barbhaiya M, Sparks JA, et al. - Two dietary patterns and SLE risk among women in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS, 1984–2014) and Nurses' Health Study II (NHSII, 1991–2015) were prospectively analyzed in order to examine whether a prudent dietary pattern was correlated with a lower risk of SLE, and whether a Western dietary pattern was related to a greater risk of SLE. During 3,833,054 person-years of follow-up, 82 NHS incident SLE cases and 98 NHSII SLE cases were validated. A greater (healthier) prudent dietary pattern score was not related to SLE risk. A notably heightened risk for SLE was not noted in females with higher (less healthy) Western dietary pattern scores. Results were comparable following additional adjustment for BMI. Incident anti-dsDNA positive SLE and anti-dsDNA negative SLE was not related to either dietary pattern. In conclusion, no association between prudent or Western dietary pattern score and risk of SLE was noticed.
