Dietary patterns and management of type 2 diabetes: A systematic review of randomised clinical trials
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Mar 01, 2019
Papamichou D, et al. – In this study, researchers analyzed information from various database (relevant randomized controlled trials) in order to evaluate the impact of adherence to low-carbohydrate, macrobiotic, vegan, vegetarian, Mediterranean, and intermittent fasting (IF) diets for ≥ 6 months vs low-fat diets on diabetes control and management. In all, no significant differences in glycemic control, weight, and lipids were recorded for the majority of low-carbohydrate diets vs low-fat diets. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet, however, resulted in improved body weight and HbA1c levels and delayed requirement for diabetes treatment. In addition, the vegan and macrobiotic diets demonstrated better glycemic control; the vegetarian diet, on the other hand, increased body weight reduction and improved insulin sensitivity.
