Dietary intake of people with severe mental illness: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Teasdale SB, et al. - Via conducting a systematic, comprehensive evaluation of 58 eligible studies, researchers examined dietary intake in people with psychotic and bipolar disorders. Outcomes revealed significantly higher dietary energy and sodium intake among people with severe mental illness vs controls. According to qualitative synthesis, higher energy and sodium intakes were correlated with poorer diet quality and eating patterns. The investigators recommended targeting these dietary components for preventative interventions to improve weight and other physical health outcomes in this population.
