Dietary habits of adolescents living in North America, Europe or Oceania: A review on fruit, vegetable and legume consumption, sodium intake, and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases May 15, 2019

Rosi A, et al. - Researchers performed a literature review to determine the dietary habits of adolescents. Their report focused on fruit, vegetable, and legume intake; salt/sodium consumption; and adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern. Overall, they analyzed 58 relevant papers involving > 150 healthy youth (10–19 years old) living in North America, Europe, or Oceania. In almost all the examined populations, the average fruit and vegetable intake was strongly below the recommended values of 400 g or five portions per day. With regard to legume consumption, very little information was available. For sodium intake, levels were far above the recommended 5 g per day in the majority of the screened populations. The youth living in Mediterranean countries were found to be medium–low adherents to the Mediterranean diet.
