Dietary cadmium and risk of breast cancer subtypes defined by hormone receptor status: A prospective cohort study

Grioni S, et al. - In 8,924 females between 1987 and 1992, authors examined the relationship between dietary cadmium and breast cancer risk determined by estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and HER2 status. They identified 451 incident cases of breast cancer through the Varese Cancer Registry during a median of 22 years of follow-up. Mean dietary cadmium intake was 7.8 μg/day. They observed that females with highest quintile of cadmium consumption had greater breast cancer risk than those with lowest quintile of intake. They noted HR=1.73 for premenopausal women whereas postmenopausal females had HR = 1.32. Overall, they reported no variations in cadmium-related risk of breast cancer with ER, PR or HER2 status.
