Dietary advanced glycation end products and the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study
Cancer Mar 05, 2020
Peterson LL, et al. - Researchers here examined if and how dietary advanced glycation end product (AGE) intake is associated with the risk of postmenopausal invasive breast cancer. In this prospective cohort study, they assessed 183,548 postmenopausal women from the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study. Among these, they identified 9,851 breast cancers (1978 advanced stage) during the mean follow-up of 12.8 years. More frequently women with a higher intake had lower education levels, higher BMI, less physical activity, were current smokers, and had higher fat and meat intake. They observed an increased risk of breast cancer in correlation with the highest quintile of AGE intake (compared with the lowest) after adjusting for breast cancer risk factors. Findings suggest a possible role of dietary AGEs in the development of postmenopausal breast cancer.
